Contactless cards general features

Бесконтактные носители
Contactless plastic CHIP cards are one of the main elements of radio-frequency identification of object (RFID) systems. In contrast with presently widespread methods of identification by barcode or by information from magnetic band, RFID systems have a row of essential advantages. Identification of an object is effected by a unique digital code that is saved in the CHIP memory and radiates within the radio wave range. The CHIP is placed directly into a plastic card body. Antenna that accepts and radiates radio waves also is placed there. Beyond the unique identification code CHIP can contain a rewritable protected memory, coding elements, etc. Contactless plastic cards inquiry is carried out automatically by a transmitter-receiver (reader). CHIP cards get energy, necessary for forming of call-out, from the reader by radio waves. The CHIP takes seats in plastic card directly, the antenna, which acceptes and radiates hertzian waves, also takes seats there. Except unique identification code CHIP can contain the rewritten protected memory, elements of the coding and etc. Questioning of the noncontact plastic cards does automatically by means of acceptance-sending device (reader). The energy, required for shaping the callout, was got by CHIP of the card by the radio link from the reader.

Main advantages of contactless plastic cards:

  • High reliability and unlimited resource of the card (no need for a mechanical contact between card and reader)
  • High speed of information exchange between card and reader (in fraction of a second)
  • Possibilities for multiuse (for reading – no limitation of interaction quantity, for overwriting – up to 100 000 times)
  • High reliability of information storage (information is safe from external affects and can be kept up to 10 years)
  • High protection level from forgeries (almost impossible to fabricate the card)
  • Possibilities for multifunction (the card can keep a big volume of rewritten information and be used simultaneously for a row of applications).

Variants for using of contactless plastic cards:

  • Electronic access control and account of working hours of a company’s personnel
  • Systems of requiring payment access on different objects (attractions, trainer halls, ski lifts, etc.)
  • Systems of electronic payments for using the different types of public transport
  • Systems of electronic payments for services for the proprietors of transport vehicles (payments on patrol stations, parking, pay roads, etc.)
  • Systems of defense and signaling on transport vehicles
  • Mini payments for services and commodities (electronic purse).

The existing RFID systems differentiate, as a rule, by bearing frequency of in-use radio signals, type of modulation, protocol of the exchange and volume of the information, placed on a card.

Presently there are three main frequency ranges, in which the RFID systems work:
  • Low-frequency range (before 150 kHz)

  • Middle-frequency range (13,56 MHz)

  • High-frequency range (850 - 950 MHz and 2,4 - 5 GHz).
In the low-frequency range wide spread was got by cards with CHIPs working at 125 kHz frequency and using protocol of a Swiss company EM-Marin. The CHIPs of the companies Temic, Atmel, Microchip and a Russian company Angstrem are compatible with these CHIPs.
Contactless cards ISO EM-Marin offered by our company belong to the indicated group of the contactless plastic cards.

In a mid-frequency range speed of reception/transmission of information is considerably higher, than that in a low-frequency range. This circumstance allows reader easily to distinguish several cards being simultaneously in the field of its antenna (anti-collision function), that extends the area of the use of contactless plastic cards considerably. Developments of microcircuits for a mid-frequency range area are available at the row of the known producers, such as Philips (technology Mifare), Microchip, Infineon (the former Siemens) and others.
Our company offers the contactless cards Mifare Standart (in a mid-frequency range).

A high-frequency range, as a rule, is intended for identification objects on bigger distances (10 - 15 m), moving with a speed up to 200 km/hour. Long distances of action of the high-frequency RFID systems are reached due to using narrow-beam antennae of readers and high powers of query signal. At the modern market of RFID systems transponders (marks) for such systems are represented by products of the companies Amtech and Micro Design ASA. The indicated transponders contain inside a transceiver and now they are not produced as plastic cards.

Service instructions on contactless plastic cards

It is forbidden to bend a card more than on 20°, to wash it with detergents, to affect it with organic solvents, to heat it above 85°C and to undertake any actions that lead to mechanical damages of a card. It is advisable to avoid the carrying of a card with keys, coins and other hard objects since it harms picture on the card and the card itself.
